Creativity Takes Flight at Bristol House: Introducing Our New “Art by Me” Class
There is something special about creating something with your own hands. Choosing the colors, watching an idea come together, and finally being able to hold up the finished piece and say, “I made this.”
That feeling does not disappear with age or memory loss.
At Bristol House Memory Care in Warrington, PA, we believe meaningful activities are an important part of creating days filled with purpose, connection, and enjoyment. Our newest activity, “Art by Me,” gives residents an opportunity to explore their creativity in a relaxed and encouraging environment.
For our first projects, creativity truly took flight as residents created their own beautiful butterfly canvases. While everyone began with a similar theme, the finished pieces could not have been more different. Each resident chose colors and details that appealed to them, resulting in artwork that reflected their own individual personality.
More importantly, everyone had a chance to enjoy the process.
Art Is About Much More Than Making Something Beautiful
When people think about activities in a memory care community, they sometimes picture activities simply being used to fill time. At Bristol House, we look at engagement very differently.
A thoughtfully planned activity can provide opportunities for conversation, decision making, movement, concentration, socialization, and personal expression.
Art is especially well suited for this.
There is no need to remember a complicated set of instructions or worry about getting every detail exactly right. Residents can participate at their own pace and in whatever way feels comfortable to them.
Someone may carefully select each color. Another person may simply choose the colors that make them happy in that particular moment. Some residents enjoy talking while they work, while others become completely focused on their project.
There is no single correct way to participate.
That freedom is exactly what makes an activity like Art by Me so enjoyable.
Creativity Does Not Have an Age Limit
One of the most rewarding parts of introducing a new activity is seeing residents discover something they enjoy.
Some people have been artistic throughout their lives. Others may not have picked up a paintbrush or colored a picture in decades. For others, this may be an entirely new experience.
None of that matters once the project begins.
The goal is not to create professional artwork. It is to provide an enjoyable experience where residents can make choices, experiment with colors, and create something that belongs entirely to them.
Our butterfly project was a wonderful example.
The same basic idea resulted in completely different pieces of artwork. Some residents selected bright, vibrant colors. Others chose softer combinations. Every finished butterfly had its own character.
And seeing the smiles as residents showed off their finished canvases may have been the best part of the entire activity.
Meaningful Engagement Is an Important Part of Memory Care
Families searching for memory care in Bucks County understandably spend a great deal of time thinking about safety, personal care, meals, medication assistance, and the physical environment.
Those things are extremely important.
But there is another question worth asking when visiting a memory care community:
What will my loved one actually do during the day?
Quality memory care should be about more than meeting someone’s basic needs. Residents still need opportunities to participate, interact, laugh, create, listen to music, spend time with others, and experience moments of accomplishment.
For someone living with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, an activity does not need to be complicated to be meaningful.
Painting a butterfly can become a conversation.
Choosing a color can become a decision.
Finishing a canvas can become an accomplishment.
Showing it to a friend, caregiver, or family member can become a moment of pride.
These seemingly small experiences can add something very important to a person’s day.
The Finished Artwork Tells Only Part of the Story
Looking at photographs from our Art by Me class, it would be easy to focus entirely on the finished canvases. They are colorful, creative, and certainly something our residents can be proud of.
But the artwork itself is only part of what makes the activity meaningful.
The real experience happens around the table.
It is residents spending time together. It is deciding which color should go where. It is concentrating on a detail and then stepping back to see the result. It is staff members offering encouragement and residents complimenting one another’s work.
Sometimes an activity also creates unexpected connections. A particular color, flower, song, or image may remind someone of something familiar from earlier in life and start a conversation.
Those moments cannot always be planned.
We simply create opportunities for them to happen.
Creating a Community That Feels Like Home
At Bristol House Memory Care, our Warrington community is intentionally designed to provide a smaller, more personal environment for people living with memory loss.
That philosophy extends to the way we approach everyday life.
We want residents to have opportunities to participate rather than simply observe. We want activities to feel inviting rather than forced. Most importantly, we want residents to continue experiencing the simple pleasures that make a day enjoyable.
Sometimes that means music.
Sometimes it means conversation or spending time outdoors.
And sometimes it means sitting down with a blank butterfly canvas and discovering exactly where your imagination takes you.
Our new Art by Me class is another way we can provide those opportunities.
Something Worth Bringing Home and Sharing
There is also something wonderful about finishing a project that residents can keep.
The butterfly canvases are more than decorations. They are tangible reminders of an experience and something residents can proudly show their families.
For family members, these projects can also provide another way to connect during visits. Instead of simply asking what happened during the day, there is something sitting right there that can become part of the conversation.
“Tell me about your butterfly.”
“What made you choose that color?”
“Where should we put it?”
Those are simple questions, but sometimes the simplest interactions become the most meaningful.
See Life at Bristol House Memory Care
Choosing memory care for someone you love involves much more than comparing rooms and amenities. You are choosing the place where your parent, spouse, grandparent, or other loved one will spend their days.
You should feel comfortable asking what those days actually look like.
At Bristol House Memory Care, activities like Art by Me are part of our commitment to creating an environment where residents are encouraged to participate, express themselves, and continue enjoying meaningful experiences.
Our residents did a wonderful job with their first butterfly canvases, and we could not be more proud of the creativity and personality displayed in every piece.
Now we have just one question.
What should they create next?
